David: The Shepherd King (A 26 part series)

bulletLife and Times of The Man After God's Heart  Various Texts (David Series #1 - Redick)
"David's name appears 1034 times in the Scripture. 28 books of the Bible contain references to him (42% of the 66 books of the Bible). You must read all or part of 66 chapters of the Bible to get an overall picture of his life. Compared to other Bible characters, that is a lot. Abraham's story is told in only 14 Bible chapters. Joseph likewise is described in 14 chapters. Jacob's story is told in 11. You understand what I mean, then, when I speak of the magnitude of the task. Yet the life of David is too important to ignore or only refer to on occasion because there is so much of it. God's Spirit has seen fit to preserve it for us and it would be to our detriment to ignore it."
bulletHow To Be Ready When God Calls You For Something Special  1 Samuel 16:1-13 (David Series #2 - Redick)
"Many of us could be used by God in very significant ways if we were just ready at the time of God's call. There is so much work to do all around us for the cause of the kingdom! And, as has been the case since the days of Jesus, "the harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few." (Matthew 9:37) One of the reasons for that shortage of workers is that many of us are not ready when God calls for special things. Perhaps we are distracted or inattentive or spiritually disqualified, so He has to pass us over."
bulletLessons To Help You Fight the Giants in Your Life  1 Samuel 17  (David Series #3 - Redick)
"Goliath's spear head weighed 25 pounds, heavier than one of our modern sledge hammers. The Hebrew word for 'shield' here designates a massive defense implement behind which a man could crouch and walk to be protected from spears and arrows. A man walked in front of Goliath to deflect anything that might be shot at the champion. The Champion from Gath had a bellicose swagger to match the size of his armor and weapons. Goliath was calling for something that was characteristic to some of the ancient battles of the east. Rather than engage two whole armies, they would each pick a champion and stake the outcome of the battle on that one man. The Philistines had little doubt who their choice was. As the giant belched his challenge from across the canyon, the Israelites cringed in fear on the other side!"
bulletLife Lessons to Prepare You For Service  1 Samuel 17:55-18:9 (David Series #4 - Redick)
When God called David out of the sheep pens of his father to become King of Israel, he didn't just thrust him into the job. He prepared him first. David probably learned more about God's written instruction from Samuel, the prophet, the man who anointed him to be king. But the second part of David's preparation consisted of a number of years filled with experiences from which he learned by observation. What are we learning from our experiences?
bulletWhat To Do When God Removes Your Security  1 Samuel 18:6-21:15 (David Series #5 - Redick)
"God wants us to find our security ultimately in Him. The reason for this is that all of these things are temporary and our relationship with Him has the potential of being eternal. But there is an independent streak in all of us that tends sometimes to neglect to develop our security and trust in God when there are so many other things that offer what we think is secure." This lesson examines the five "securities" God removed from David in preparing him for service and how he handled to loss.
bulletCave Training  1 Samuel 22:1a; Psalm 142 (David Series #6 - Redick)
"[It] has been man's problem since Eden, and it, I'm convinced, is the reason why God didn't deliver the remedy for sin to man while Adam and Eve were still in the garden. Man had to be shown that he couldn't save himself before God could reach out and save him. Very few of us acknowledge our need for God without first seeing our own insufficiency." Considers David's experience in the Cave of Adullum and compares it to our experiences when we are stripped of all our independence and must turn to God.
bulletVengeance Is The Lord's 1 Samuel 24:1-22  (David Series #7 - Redick)
Ah, sweet vengeance! You don't know how sweet until you suddenly have the chance to get back at someone for the wrongs they've done you and there are plenty of people around cheering you on. That was the situation for David as it appeared that God had finally delivered Saul into his hand. His actions will surprise you, though. He didn't take vengeance! This message exhorts us to leave all personal vengeance to God.
bulletA Wise Woman Stops an Angry Man 1 Samuel 25:1-42 (David Series #8 - Redick)
Nabal and Abigail are truly the "odd couple" of the Bible. If ever there were scriptural grounds for divorce based on "incompatibility" (there aren't) this would be this case. While it is often true that "opposites attract," probably this marriage was not one of choice, but rather one arranged by the parents of these two in their youth. Abigail was a remarkable woman of courage and deep commitment to God. Her example is one to challenge both men and women!
bulletSleeping With the Enemy  1 Samuel 27-30 (David Series #9 - Redick)
Most of us probably don't think of the "man after God's own heart" as a backslider, yet, during one particular 16 month period of his life, prior to his becoming king of Israel, David actually got so discouraged with the way things were going in his life that it appears he abandoned the Lord and the Lord's people and went and lived with the enemy.
bulletThe Prodigal Returns 1 Samuel 30:6-31  (David Series #10 - Redick)
We have come to a place in our study where David is in great need of mercy. In deep discouragement, he has backslidden, actually living with the enemy. Now he has come to his senses. In brokenness he turns back to God. What did he receive when he turned? Was it justice or mercy? What he deserved or what he needed?
bulletHow the Mighty Are Fallen!   1 Samuel 32 (David Series #11 - Redick)
Israel did not have archers in her ranks at this time. Their weapons and armor were designed for face-to-face, hand-to-hand combat. As they turned in flight from the approaching Philistine enemies, they exposed their unprotected back sides. The arrows of the enemy found their mark. Saul was hit.
bulletMourning, Judgment, and the Song of the Bow 2 Samuel 1  (David Series #12 - Redick)
It is the mark of a spiritually mature person to give a blessing instead of a curse to an enemy when there is opportunity. Yet blessing those who persecute you is not the thing that comes naturally. This message deals with a passage that tells the story of giving a blessing to an enemy when opportunity was present for a curse. It concerns the actions of David as he received the news of the death of King Saul, the man who had been trying for nearly 10 years to kill him.
bulletMoving Up - Finally! 2 Samuel 2  (David Series #13 - Redick)
Question: How do you build a strong powerful nation out of the ruins of failure and defeat? Answer: You seek guidance from the God of heaven. Question: How do you build a strong, godly, loyal family in a world gone mad in rebellion against its Creator? Answer: You seek guidance from the God of heaven. Question: How do you build a stable, sane, productive life amid the craziness of a population bent on self destruction? Answer: You seek guidance from the God of heaven. David finally moves up a bit in the world. He becomes King over part of his future kingdom. His wise seeking of God's counsel shows what kind of a man he was a suggests what we should do as well when God moves us up.
bulletLord of All: Part 1  2 Samuel 3:1-19  (David Series #14 - Redick)
"You need to realize that Jesus won't force His rule onto you either. If He comes to rule in your life it will because you asked Him too. That is important to know because you may have been waiting for Him somehow to force his way into your life and in some way make the decision easier for you. He won't. He stands at the door and knocks, but you are the only one who can let him in. If you die without His lordship, the blame will be yours."
bulletLord of All: Part 2 2 Samuel 5:1-25  (David Series #15 - Redick)
Suppose you had a thousand acre farm and someone offered to buy it. You agree to sell the land except for one acre right in the middle that you keep for yourself. Did you know that in some areas, so called "grandfather laws" would allow you to have continued access to that one spot? And you would also have the right to build a road across the surrounding property in order to get to that spot, even though the property doesn't belong to you. That is how it is when we make less than a 100 percent surrender to Christ's lordship. Satan only holds a small plot of ground in our lives, but because of it, he has free access at any time he wants it. If you want Satan out, you must make Christ Lord of all.
bulletPrecept and Principle 2 Samuel 6:1-19  (David Series #16 - Redick)
"...it seems that the church is full of people who emphasize either precept to the exclusion of principle or principle to the exclusion of precept. It makes the church a battleground..."
bulletWhat to Do When God's Answer Is "No" 2 Samuel 7  (David Series #17 - Redick)
Life has its disappointments. We all know it. Sometimes, though, we really have our hearts set on something. We're convinced it has to be the Lord's will. Then our plans fall through. We wonder what happened. We wonder why. It seems God has said "no." The message examines how we should deal with such issues.
bulletUp From Lo-Debar: A Study in Grace 2 Samuel 9  (David Series #18 - Redick)
"No matter how long or how fervently we have served the Lord, we still stand where we do because of Christ, just like Mephibosheth stood where he was because of his father, Jonathan. So we shouldn't boast, as Paul mentioned in Ephesians. We shouldn't compare our record of service with that of others as though we were somehow worth more to God than they. We eat with our feet under God's table and enjoy the benefits of family membership because Christ suffered before us on our behalf." This message enumerates some of the major aspects of the doctrine of grace through an old Testament story in II Samuel 9.
bulletA Fall From the Rooftop  2 Samuel 11:1-27 (David Series #19 - Redick)
When the engine of lust suddenly roars to life in your body, the time to kill that engine is now! Don't let it idle while you inspect the merchandise! Every revolution of that engine will make you weaker and less able to say no.
bulletThe Truth About Sin in the Believer  2 Samuel 12:1-15 (David Series #20 - Redick)
Under the allurement of a sensual sin like adultery, the consequences are usually the last thing on a person's mind. Also ignored is the truth that in order to fulfill the act, one must despise God and His word, at least for a time. These are not my ideas. These are truths that come from II Samuel 12:1-15, the account of Nathan's confrontation of David after the sin with Bathsheba. If you presently are tempted to sin in this way, or you know someone who is, God could use this message to pull you/them back from the brink.
bulletAbsalom: Part 1 2 Samuel 3:1-5; 13:1-39  (David Series #21 - Redick)
Yes, God would forgive David for the sin with Bathsheba, but that did not erase the scars of disillusionment that were in the young man, Absalom. To him his father was a man who did not practice what he preached - an example not worth following. So he didn't.
bulletAbsalom: Part 2  2 Samuel 13:39-18:33 (David Series #22)
Go home and make it your first item of business to tell your children that you love them. Then tell them again and again. Show them, too, by your actions, even when you must discipline them. Never withhold your love from them. Don't wait, as David did, for the death of your child to realize where you went wrong!
bulletThe Immutable Law of Reaping   2 Samuel 12 & I Kings 2 (David Series #23 - Redick)
The immutable law of reaping. We get back in return what we give. It all comes back. We reap what we sow. If you are tempted right now to sin and are thinking that you will probably get away with it, think again. Think again, and turn away..."
bulletWeathering the Storms of God's Discipline 2 Samuel 15:1-34 (David Series #24 - Redick)
What is it that makes one person bitter under the discipline of God, and another better? What causes one man to give up when God disciplines him, and another man to continue on and even, in some cases, to thrive?
bulletBig Enough to Overlook the Offenses of Others  2 Samuel 16:5-14;19:16-23 (David Series #25 - Redick)
How well do you handle criticism? Are you big enough to overlook it, or does it stop you dead in your tracks? When someone assaults your character or your sincerity or your competence (or at least you think they have) how do you deal with it? Do you turn bitter? Do you hate? Do you lash out? Do you throw in the towel and quit?
bulletFacing Your Appointment With Death 1 Chronicles 28-29 (David Series #26 - Redick)
This message examines the account of the Patriarch, David, as he approached his death. The teaching reminds us of the need to plan for our own death. This is the final message in this series.
